EYELID SURGERY (BLEPHAROPLASTY) : OVERVIEW

Eyelid surgery, known medically as blepharoplasty (and also called an eye-lift), is a cosmetic surgery procedure that is available to people who live in Birmingham or the West Midlands areas via our Birmingham and Manchester clinics.

Birmingham Beauty Clinic’s specialist eye surgeon has been performing eyelid surgery for many years to correct changes around the eye such as sagging, excess skin, drooping, extra folds and bulges.

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to restore a younger look of the eyes.

Ageing can cause sagging of both the upper and lower eyelids due to weakness and loss of elasticity of the skin.

If you suffer from excess skin on your upper eyelids, you may find that an extra fold of skin hangs over your eyelashes, whereas excess skin on the lower eyelids can result in a bulging appearance with extra wrinkles.

The ultimate aim with eyelid surgery is to restore an aesthetic appearance that you are happy with. Often ageing can make us feel anxious and unhappy, so by removing excess skin and fat deposits from the eyelids, your cosmetic surgeon is able to smooth and tighten the supporting areas in order to transition smoothly to your cheek with a youthful contour.

EYELID SURGERY - PROCEDURE

Cosmetic eyelid surgery can be performed under both local or general anaesthetic depending on the extent of your procedure. At Birmingham Beauty Clinic, we often combine eyelid surgery with other cosmetic procedures such as facelift, eyebrow-lift, liposuction and dermal fillers as well as performing the surgery as a sole procedure.

1. Each patient case is as individual as they are when it comes blepharoplasty. Some patients wish to alter their upper eyelid, some target the lower eyelid, and others have both the upper and lower eyelids altered.

2. In upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made along the natural crease. Excess skin is removed, fat around the eye is either removed or redraped in a different place and closed with a nylon stitch.

3. In lower eyelid surgery, an incision is placed just below the eyelashes along the eyelid margin. Fat is either removed or redraped and incision is closed with a nylon stitch similar to upper lid.

4. The ends of the stitch are taped on either end, which are then removed in around one week post surgery.

5. Upper eyelid procedures are typically performed under local anaesthetic. However, general anaesthesic is preferred when combined with lower lid surgery. It is performed as a day procedure or as an overnight stay.

WHO IS THE IDEAL CANDIDATE?

Looking at sage with clear eyes is fine but sagging eyes are a nightmare. We have the right treatment procedure lined up for you depending on your particular requirements. You are an ideal candidate for eyelid surgery depending on the conditions pointed out below:

You need to be 18 years and above to be able to undergo this procedure.
Whether you have age or stress related sagging skin around eyes
Drooping eyelids or bags or folds under the eyes
Unable to see clearly due to sagging skin
Need corrective measures to counter the eyelid defects from birth.

Side Effects

There are common and rare side effects associated with eyelid surgery that you should be aware of when making your decision for treatment. These include:

* Swelling and bruising. Black eyes are common after an eyelid procedure but settle down after a few days. Bruising may take longer to resolve.
* You may have blurred vision for a few hours, but if it persists you should contact your surgeon immediately.
* Your eyes may water for the first few days.
* Eyes may feel gritty and dry for a few weeks and may require artificial eye drops and ointment.
* Small white cysts may appear in the stitch line. This can be treated by removing with a needle as an outpatient procedure.

* The risk of general anaesthesia is not common, but can include DVT, chest infection and pulmonary embolism.

Postoperative Advice/Instructions (Recovery)

Eyelid surgery is performed in our state of the art Manchester hospital. So after your surgery you will need to arrange for someone to assist you with transport back to your home in Birmingham or other region in the West Midlands. Although you will be provided with a plan of action for your aftercare and recovery, below is general guidance of what to expect so that you can get the best possible results from your eyelid treatment.

* IMMEDIATE

1. You will have bruising and black eyes that will worsen by day two.

2. After a few days the swelling should start to settle.

3. Nylon stitches are removed around day 5. Until then you should avoid makeup – particularly eye makeup.You can use ice packs on your eyes multiple times per day to ease any pain and discomfort.

4. Taking pain relief medication will also help with any symptoms.
5. You will be provided with eye drops or ointment that you can use to gently clean your eyelids.
6. Swimming, strenuous activity and lifting heavy objects should be avoided for a minimum of one week.
7. Avoid rubbing your eyes and sleep with your head raised.

* AFTER ONE WEEK

1. Bruising subsides and swelling settles.

2. It is important to not wear contact lenses until at least two weeks after your surgery.

3. Most patients take at least one week off work.

4. After this you can return to work providing you feel comfortable enough to do so.

* AFTER ONE MONTH+

1. Swelling will have reduced massively and bruising should have gone away.

2. You can continue to apply cool compresses and wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from sun and wind.

FINAL RESULTS

Final results of eyelid surgery can be seen between four to six months.
